Huawei’s latest P20 Pro first impression is as loaded as a smartphone can get. Launched alongside its smaller sibling, the P20, the powerful flagship comes with a number of attention-grabbing features. Huawei has left no stone unturned to ensure that the P20 duo stands out from the crowd.

Two is company, three’s a party

With the inception of the P series, Huawei has brought the camera expertise of German major Leica to smartphones. While the P9 and P10 offered Leica lenses to capture RGB and monochrome info, their successor takes the partnership to the next level, quite literally. The primary 40MP camera brings the highest resolution seen on a smartphone in recent times, exceeded only by Nokia’s 41MP Pureview camera-toting smartphones – the Lumia 1020 and 808. The primary snapper shoots RGB and is coupled with a 20MP sensor that captures monochrome information, resulting in a sharp image with better contrast. The third shooter is an 8MP sensor with a telephoto lens, providing the ability to optically zoom up to 3x – which is also the first on a phone. The P20 Pro can also offer lossless zoom of up to 5x.

That’s not all, the cameras have several other tricks too. Using a combination of different focusing mechanisms like laser, phase detection, contrast detection, and deep focus, the Huawei P20 Pro features 4D Predictive Focus ensuring that it can pre-focus even on a moving object. With Light Fusion tech, the smartphone promises impressive image quality even in dim environments. It also has a DSLR-like ISO support for up to 102,000 levels, as compared to the usual ISO sensitivity of up to 6,400 or 12,800 available on smartphones. The device can record slow-mo videos at 960 fps too… making it among the very few handsets to offer such capability. The smartphone also sports a powerful 24MP selfie camera with Portrait Lighting feature to offer studio-like effects.

In the twilight zone

From the front, the Huawei P20 Pro offers a bezel-less design, but is quite different from other such phones available in the market. That’s because, despite its display notch and bezel-less design, it still has a physical button with an integrated fingerprint scanner on the bottom chin. The home button also acts as a navigation key as it supports various gestures, letting you use the 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED panel to the fullest.

There’s more. While the Huawei P20 Pro comes in a myriad of colour options like Midnight Blue and Black, the most interesting of them all is Twilight hue, which has different shades of gradient blue. In a sea of similar-looking smartphones, the unique colour of the P20 Pro should ensure that it catches everyone’s attention wherever you go. The phone is also impervious to dust and water, thanks to IP67 certification.

Fully-loaded innards

The Huawei P20 Pro comes powered by the brand’s in-house high-end SoC, the Kirin 970, which also powers the Mate 10 and View 10. The octa-core chipset comes with big.LITTLE architecture with four powerful Cortex-A73 cores running at 2.36GHz, with the four power-efficient Cortex-A53 cores tuned at 1.8GHz. Coupled with 6 gigs of RAM and Mali-G72 GPU, the smartphone should be able to offer a buttery-smooth performance even while using heavy apps or playing graphically-intensive games. The smartphone ships with 128GB of storage.

The smartphone also supports Google’s ARCore to run Augmented Reality-optimised apps and games. The Kirin 970 comes with a dedicated NPU too, offering a dedicated chipset for processing AI applications.

AI capabilities

Artificial intelligence is becoming more than a buzzword, and Huawei aims to be at the forefront of this revolution. The brand is utilising AI for boosting camera capabilities and several other things. Talking about the camera, it comes with AI scene detection mode, which identifies over 19 categories to offer the best output as per the scene being captured. It also comes with AIS (AI Image stabilisation) to offer blur-free photos and videos. AIS also helps in keeping the images smooth for shooting low-light photographs.

A powerful battery to back things up

While there are several smartphones featuring powerful batteries of 4,000mAh or more, there’s no flagship that can boast such a capacity. Until the P20 Pro came along. The device offers a beefy cell inside its slim body, and also supports fast charging capabilities. It can also be juiced up wirelessly.

The Huawei P20 Pro will be going on sale starting May 3rd on Amazon with a price tag of Rs 64,999. While the price certainly puts it in the same territory as other flagships, it does bring forth an impressive set of specs and features.
